Black  Bodies  in White Spaces in Puppetry and Beyond

with Jacqueline Wade

Sunday April 7th, 2-4:00pm

The New Orleans Healing Center, 2372 St. Claude Ave

Black Bodies in White Spaces in Puppetry and Beyond explores issues of race through shadow puppetry and what it especially means to be an African American and BIPOC person in America today.  Everyone is  welcome to be part of this workshop. Implicit bias will also be explored. We will have a discussion based on short passages from Frantz Fanon's “Black Skin, White Masks”,  "My Grandmother's Hands" by Resmaa Menakem  and "The Isis Papers" by Frances Cress Welsing.  We will also discuss what students decide to share along with exploring it through improvisation and theatre games. The students will then get into groups to create skits through role play and improvisation which will be put into shadow puppetry. Jacqueline will provide puppets for them. The students will also have the opportunity to make additional shadow puppets for their shadow puppet skits presentation if need be. They will act out their skits near the end of the workshop and process what they experienced and learned about themselves and others using shadow puppetry.  The session is a two hour workshop.  The cost is $25.
